What is the DNS (Domain Name System)?

The DNS translates IP addresses into domain names and vice versa and is therefore the backbone of the Internet. In other words, when a user types “octopoly.nz” into their browser, the DNS tells the browser that the website is located on a server with IP address 188.166.239.187. So instead of remembering the full IP address, users only need to remember the domain name.
